Cute Sleepy Guy

I have to write this down because I don't want to forget about it.  Tonight, Walden went to sleep in the cutest way!

I think I've mentioned this on the blog before, but he has a tough time getting to sleep.  On rare occasions, he will fall asleep nursing, which is fantastic!  More often, though, I end up walking around the house with him for 10-30 minutes until he falls asleep.  It wasn't so bad when he was 10 lbs, but now that he's pushing 25 lbs, it can be wearying!  I don't want to take for granted that I get to hold my baby as he goes to sleep though, and I do appreciate that he is so comforted by my arms.  If I'm feeling particularly tired, I imagine that I'm an old lady who wished that I could walk my baby to sleep one more time, and I got my wish :)

Anyways, that doesn't mean that we don't hope for other "go-to-sleep" methods to work.  We've tried some different things:  put him down drowsy but not asleep (nope, scream-fest every time we try it), let him play in bed until he falls asleep (this worked for a while when he was about 6-8 months old, but now he just gets a second wind), rock him to sleep (seldom works and often makes him cry), and wear him in the baby carrier until he falls asleep (this works but takes a bit more time than walking with him out of the carrier, and it can be tricky to get him out of it and keep him asleep, but it's a good alternative when I have the time).

Well tonight I was walking with him and he just kept squirming, so I decided to try the rocking chair.  He didn't cry, so that was good (usually if he realizes we're not reading a book in the rocking chair, he cries).  I rocked him and he happily sat in my lap for a while, just looking up at me and touching my face and saying "mama mama mama" - I loved that!  Then, he started burrowing around, changing his position every few moments.  Eventually he flopped his head on my shoulder, looking up at me, and just looked at me until he fell asleep.  It was the sweetest thing!  I rocked him for a long time, even though I didn't really need to; it was just too precious!
